The Senior Elementary program at Montessori Academy supports students during a stage when they are naturally drawn to abstract thinking, complex problem-solving, and collaborative work. Our program meets these developmental needs by providing a thoughtfully prepared environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, fosters independent learning, and nurtures growing social awareness.
Senior Elementary students are introduced to impressionistic lessons that encourage critical thinking and inspire a deeper understanding of abstract concepts. These lessons are designed to make complex ideas accessible and engaging, sparking curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
Language studies are a major focus and include spelling, vocabulary, Latin roots, grammar, editing, and reading comprehension. Students develop their writing skills through a wide range of formats, such as research projects, novel studies, persuasive and narrative writing, speech writing, and creative writing.
Mathematics continues to follow the Montessori sequence, beginning with long division and advancing through pre-algebra and introductory algebra. Students use hands-on materials to reinforce their understanding of concepts. In sixth grade, students also begin using a traditional textbook, which supports their transition to more conventional academic environments.
Our science curriculum is grounded in the study of life and the interconnectedness of all living things. Students explore major themes such as the theory of evolution, early humans, the classification of living organisms, and the systems of the human body. Cultural studies expand to include history, government, and global geography. These subjects are taught through engaging stories, research, debates, and interdisciplinary projects. Students are encouraged to connect what they learn to real-world events and social issues, helping them understand their role as citizens and stewards of the planet.
Students in Senior Elementary take on greater responsibility for their learning and classroom contributions. They set goals, manage their time, and participate in group projects that foster leadership and collaboration. As the oldest students on campus, they also serve as role models for younger peers, learning to lead with empathy and confidence.
The Senior Elementary Big Trip
One of the most memorable experiences in Senior Elementary is the Big Trip, a four-day, out-of-state adventure designed to blend academic learning with practical life skills. Each year’s destination varies, but the planning process remains consistent. Students create a business plan, organize and manage fundraising activities, and make decisions collaboratively as a group.
This project-based experience builds initiative, responsibility, teamwork, and financial literacy. It also offers students a chance to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings and celebrate the end of their elementary journey with a shared accomplishment.
By the end of sixth grade, students leave the Senior Elementary program with strong academic foundations, a deepened sense of self, and the confidence to thrive in more advanced learning environments. They are well-prepared for middle school and beyond, equipped with the tools to lead, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
